Introduction

Wml wap tutor is a basic guide to building your first wap mobile internet site. Teaches wap, wml, xml and wbmp, with leasons on all aspects of wml programming, designing and creation.

If you've come this far, you probably know something about WAP already. If you wish to learn more, specifically how to create WAP sites using wml, this tutorial is for you.

No experience necessary

No prior knowledge is required or assumed, something of a first for a WAP how-to. If you already use html you have a head start, and you can be creating WAP sites in short order. Take care though as wml and html are different. This tutorial will suit computer beginners and more experienced users equally. The good news is, creating WAP sites is quick and easy! Be sure to try any terms in bold to see if it contains a link to the glossary.

The WAP standard

WAP or Wireless Application Protocol is the standard used by mobile internet devices displaying bite sized chunks of internet style information. Note the use of the word devices, usually a mobile cell phone but could also be a Palmtop mini PC, or a PDA. One thing all WAP devices use is a browser, a computer program that interprets and displays the data.

WAP imposes several constraints on designers. First on the list is the screen. WAP displays range from small to tiny, are monochrome and low resolution. Bandwidth is low. Input methods vary. Forms and address etc. can be filled in, but the user may be writing text using number keys on a phone. Finally memory storage is small.

These constraints mean WAP is not a streaming multimedia experience of superhighway proportions. Hype aside WAP is good for small chunks of up-to-date information. If creating a results and news service for your local team, WAP is excellent. If you want to produce an in depth team profile with a picture of every player, then maybe a Web site would better serve your purpose.
