Some text characters cannot be written as normal inside WML documents, as the browser will interpret them as part of the formatting code and may produce an error. In these cases character entries are used. These consist of either the name or standard number of the character, contained within an opening & (ampersand) and closing ; (semicolon). For example an opening angle bracket, or less than symbol, < is represented by < for less than, or < within your WML code. Note the use of hash # before the number in the second example

Character entries should be used with care and caution, and code containing them tested for errors before releasing the document onto the internet.
